Dr Simos Malamis is an Associate Professor at the Department of Water Resources and Environmental Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens. His research focus is on advanced technologies for wastewater treatment and resource recovery, water reuse, biological nutrient removal and nature-based solutions for water purification. He has more than 90 publications in international peer reviewed scientific journals and more than 150 presentations in International Conferences. Dr Malamis is the coordinator of the Horizon2020 project HYDROUSA and the principal investigator in several other European and National projects (SMART-PLANT, AccelWater, iWAYS, FIT4REUSE, TRINEFLEX, REMEDIES, FORWARD-WATER). He is a member of the management committee of the IWA specialist group on small water and wastewater systems.
Costas Noutsopoulos is a Professor at the School of Civil Engineering of the National Technical University of Athens. His research interests include mathematical modelling of biochemical processes, circular economy and resources recovery, assessment of the fate of micropollutants in wastewater treatment plants and wastewater management.

The Conference brings together researchers, engineers, water practitioners from academia, industry, water utilities, public authorities and administration to exchange know how and experiences. Within the Conference knowledge and expertise will be disseminated on innovative systems, technologies and processes which are/can be applied for the management of water and wastewater. The whole water supply chain is considered from water abstraction to treated wastewater disposal and reuse. Furthermore, resource oriented sanitation as a route to sustainable and ecologically sound sanitation will be discussed focusing on developing countries.
The conference is taking place in Athens, which is the largest city and capital of Greece. It is one of the world's oldest cities, with its recorded history spanning around 3,400 years. Classical Athens was a powerful city-state a centre for the arts, learning and philosophy, home of Plato's Academy and Aristotle's Lyceum. Athens is a large cosmopolitan metropolis and central to the economic, industrial, maritime, political and cultural life in Greece. The urban area of Athens (Greater Athens and Greater Piraeus) has a population of approximately 4 million over an area of 412 km 2 . It is well connected as there are direct flights from many European cities.
The venue will be the Technopolis of Athens, located in the center of the city. This was formerly the Athens gasworks, which powered the city from the mid-19th century and ground to a halt in the 1980s. Today, Technopolis is one of Athens' largest and most vibrant cultural venues, attracting more than 900.000 visitors each year.
